The historic city of Bareilly (also known as the Jhumka, Nath Nagri city) in western Uttar Pradesh is famous for cane furniture, Surma, Zari-Zardozi and Manjha. Sahu Ram Narayan Muralimanohar Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital is located in the heart of this city, Bansmandi, the middle of Bareilly city, near the old roadways bus stand, 3 kilometers from the railway station Bareilly (Bareilly Junction) and 11 kilometers from Trishool airport Bareilly. This institution, run by the Government of Uttar Pradesh is a leading institution in the field of Ayurvedic medicine and education, which has been providing health benefits to the people of Bareilly region and far-flung areas for the last 70 years.

Earlier this institution was known as Sahu Ram Narayan Muralimanohar Charitable Pharmacy. After 1965 this building was used as a Pharmacy as well as a temple and a molasses warehouse. After some time the temple and the molasses warehouse were shifted to another place. At that time father of Shri Chandra Shekhar Trivedi, Shri Mangal Dev Trivedi and Shri Vachaspati Trivedi were working as the head Vaidya. In early 1966 Shri Dharmadatt Vaidya (former Health Minister, Uttar Pradesh), Shri Jagdish Sharan Agarwal (former Minister, Uttar Pradesh), Shri Ram Chandra Agarwal (famous Vaidya and Secretary-Town Area Bareilly), Shri Laxman Das Singhal and some other famous/eminent persons of Bareilly collectively decided to establish an Ayurveda College. At that time Vaidya Shri Darbari Lal Sharma was the President of the Indian Medical Board Lucknow and he adopted a cooperative approach and affiliated this college with the Indian Medical Board.

When Sahu Ram Narayan Muralimanohar Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital came into existence in the year 1966, first of all the famous Vaidya Dr. Dattatreya Anant Kulkarni, Vaidya Shri Niranjan Dev Shastri, Vaidya Shri C.V. Mate, Vaidya Shri Vachaspati Trivedi, Vaidya Shri Ram Chandra Agarwal and      Dr. K.K. Pandey were appointed as officers and Shri Ova Ram as an employee (peon).

After the collective decision of the college committee, this college was affiliated to Kanpur University, Kanpur in December 1971. After affiliation, this institution building, hostel building and agricultural farm of the institution located at Afzalgarh, which were the property of the college under the control of the District Magistrate, were finally taken over by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1978.

Dr. D.A. Kulkarni was the first Principal of this college. In the year 2014, all Ayurvedic colleges were affiliated to local universities in the order of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. As a result, in the year 2014, Sahu Ram Narayan Muralimnohar Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital got affiliation from Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, Bareilly. Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath Ayush University, Gorakhpur came into light in the year 2021 under the decision of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. At present, all the government and non-government Ayurvedic, Unani and Homeopathic colleges of Uttar Pradesh state including Sahu Ram Narayan Muralimnohar Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital are affiliated to Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University, Gorakhpur.

The first batch of BAMS was admitted in the year 1971. At present, basically 60 (sixty) (75 including EWS) students are admitted every year for the Ayurvedic graduate level course-BAMS, whose selection is currently done through the All India NEET examination and state AYUSH counseling. The entire course is of five years and six months, in which the teaching period is four years and six months and the clinical training/ internship period is one year.

The institute has been a pioneer in the field of medicine along with Ayurveda education. The institute’s hospital has 12 OPDs (outdoor department) and concerned IPDs (indoor department) running formally. These OPDs have special arrangements for skin diseases, Ahara-Visha and Dushi-Visha diseases, Panchakarma treatment, Gathiya Centre, Ano-rectal disease and Monthly Vaccination with the collaboration of District Hospital Bareilly. About 250 to 300 patients are diagnosed/treated in the OPD every day.

For the past 70 years, the organization has been continuously providing health services in 80 wards of Bareilly city and rural areas. The organization has adopted 5 villages of Bareilly district and their health and medical problems are resolved in time. The organization is continuously planting medicinal plants in the area around Bareilly while supporting the Government’s tree plantation program. Children are the future of the country, keeping this in mind, the organization is organizing seminars and other programs on the subject of health through Ayurveda in schools with the aim of generating curiosity about Ayurveda in school going children.

Sahu Ram Narayan Murali Manohar Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital Bareilly also conducts health programs directed/organized by the Government of India/Government of Uttar Pradesh from time to time. Under the “Ayush Aapke Dwar” program of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, a free medical camp is organized every month in the urban and rural area of Bareilly. In view of the all-round development of the students, Inter-Collegiate Sports Competition is organized every year from the year 2019. Public representative or administrative officer is invited for the inauguration of the competition. Students of all the colleges affiliated to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, Bareilly participate in this competition. On the occasion of World Yoga Day, the institution organizes yoga practice and other programs like seminars, Yogasana competition, poster competition, slogan competition, Rangoli competition etc. in the institution premises and different areas of Bareilly city as per the protocol every year.

“National Ayurveda Day” is celebrated by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari, the father of Ayurveda. National Ayurveda Day was started on 28 October 2016. On the occasion of National Ayurveda Day, every possible effort is made by Ayurveda teachers, doctors and students under the guidance of the government to spread Ayurveda to the masses. In the same sequence, the organization also organizes symposiums/seminars, free medical camps and many types of competitions on Dhanvantari Jayanti / National Ayurveda Day. With the aim of spreading Ayurveda to the masses, the organization started publishing an annual magazine “Swasthya Nirjhar” in the year 2017, the first issue of which was released on 17 October 2017. On this occasion the magazine is distributed free of cost to patients and the general public.
